ANTIBALAS & ZAP MAMA IN MIAMI THIS WEEKEND

ANTIBALAS AND ZAP MAMA US TOUR

JAN 24 2015

South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center presents Zap Mama and Antibalas on Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m.

America’s premier afrobeat band, Antibalas, is excited to announce a collaborative tour with Zap Mama, Marie Daulne’s international polyphonic vocal group, that will travel across North America in January and February 2015.

Antibalas, founded in 1998, evolved out of the same Brooklyn-based musical nucleus as Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and emerged onto the world music scene around 2000. After years of heavy international touring the band rose to greater prominence in 2007 for its role in the musical direction of the Broadway musical “Fela!.”

LATINO/US COTIDIANO AT CCE MIAMI

Photographer Carlos Álvarez Montero, member of La Family Dub will be featuring his work at this exhibition.

A national traveling exhibition visualizing, through twelve of the most talented photographic voices working internationally, the U.S. Latino experience today.

This exhibition, produced by SPAIN arts & culture and the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC is supported by AECIDand Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain.

For LATINO/US Cotidiano, the curator Claudi Carreras selected established and emerging photographers of Latino descent who embrace theme and also excel at their craft: Carlos Alvárez Montero, Sol Aramendi, Katrina Marcelle d’Autremont, Calé, Ricardo Cases, Livia Corona, Héctor Mata, Karen Miranda, Dulce Pinzón, Susana Raab, Stefan Ruiz, and Gihan Tubbeh.

Until August 20 – Visiting hours M-F from 9am to

At cce. Admission free

The Hispanic population in the U.S. has reached the 50 million mark, making the Latino community the largest minority in the country for the first time. One out of every six Americans is now of Hispanic origin, an impressive social transformation with enormous political, economic, and cultural consequences. Outdated stereotypes, racial profiles, and past cultural archetypes no longer accurately reflect a nation enriched by a growing and diverse population. But what does it look like today?

To better understand this culturally shifting phenomenon, SPAIN arts & culture commissioned Claudi Carreras, one of the foremost experts on IberoAmerican Latino photography, to research and gather the strongest photographic voices working today on issues of Latino identity. According to Carreras, although many artists work on Latino issues, we wanted to focus on artists that challenge the identity of the Latino community in the States.

For LATINO/US Cotidiano, Carreras selected established and emerging photographers of Latino descent who embrace the theme and also excel at their craft. The exhibition and photobook includes noted artists Carlos Alvárez Montero, Sol Aramendi, Katrina Marcelle d’Autremont, Calé, Ricardo Cases, Livia Corona, Héctor Mata, Karen Miranda, Dulce Pinzón, Susana Raab, Stefan Ruiz, and Gihan Tubbeh.
