LATINO/US COTIDIANO AT CCE MIAMI

Photographer Carlos Álvarez Montero, member of La Family Dub will be featuring his work at this exhibition.

A national traveling exhibition visualizing, through twelve of the most talented photographic voices working internationally, the U.S. Latino experience today.

This exhibition, produced by SPAIN arts & culture and the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC is supported by AECIDand Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Spain.

For LATINO/US Cotidiano, the curator Claudi Carreras selected established and emerging photographers of Latino descent who embrace theme and also excel at their craft: Carlos Alvárez Montero, Sol Aramendi, Katrina Marcelle d’Autremont, Calé, Ricardo Cases, Livia Corona, Héctor Mata, Karen Miranda, Dulce Pinzón, Susana Raab, Stefan Ruiz, and Gihan Tubbeh.

The Hispanic population in the U.S. has reached the 50 million mark, making the Latino community the largest minority in the country for the first time. One out of every six Americans is now of Hispanic origin, an impressive social transformation with enormous political, economic, and cultural consequences. Outdated stereotypes, racial profiles, and past cultural archetypes no longer accurately reflect a nation enriched by a growing and diverse population. But what does it look like today?

To better understand this culturally shifting phenomenon, SPAIN arts & culture commissioned Claudi Carreras, one of the foremost experts on IberoAmerican Latino photography, to research and gather the strongest photographic voices working today on issues of Latino identity. According to Carreras, although many artists work on Latino issues, we wanted to focus on artists that challenge the identity of the Latino community in the States.

For LATINO/US Cotidiano, Carreras selected established and emerging photographers of Latino descent who embrace the theme and also excel at their craft. The exhibition and photobook includes noted artists Carlos Alvárez Montero, Sol Aramendi, Katrina Marcelle d’Autremont, Calé, Ricardo Cases, Livia Corona, Héctor Mata, Karen Miranda, Dulce Pinzón, Susana Raab, Stefan Ruiz, and Gihan Tubbeh.

ADOPT & ADAPT PHOTO PROJECT

"Adopt & Adapt" is the most recent photo project from our carnal Carlos Alvarez Montero. This is how he explain his project: "In Adopt & Adapt I focus on people who are in the midst of constructing their identity but beacuse of the lack of rapport with their social, cultural and geographical situation, they have the need to adopt ideas, styles, signs and/or symbols from a part of the world different than their own. By adapting them to their specific circumstances they create a new meaning that fits their specific needs and situations. This way they create a new code that separates them from everyone else, reafirming their individuality giving them certain aura of authenticity. "Adopt & Adapt" es el proyecto fotográfico más reciente de nuestro carnal Carlos Alvarez Montero. Así es como el mismo describe su obra: "En Adopt & Adapt" me enfoque en esa gente que está construyendo su propia identidad y que por la falta de compenetración con la situación social, cultural y geográfica, tienen la necesidad de adoptar ideas, estilos, signos y/o símbolos que vienen de un mundo diferente al de ellos mismos. Al adoptar estos a sus circunstancias específicas, ellos crean un nuevo significado que se ajusta sus necesidades y situaciones. La forma en que ellos crean un nuevo código que los separa del resto, reafirma su individualidad dándoles cierta aura de autenticidad.
