I spent the Holidays listening to the new Willie Colón album,EL MALO Vol II: Prisioneros del Mambo, so you know all is well. This is one of those albums that is a pleasure to own. Colon writes a great essay for the album explaining why fans had to wait 10 years for a new album. Go check out his website and for the time being enjoy some classic Willie Colón.

By now, you've all seen the footage of the Iraqi journalist hurling his shoes at George W. Bush during a press conference in Baghdad this past Sunday. Click here to see a YouTube video of the event.

What has not been so widely reported are the words Muntadar al-Zaidi, a correspondent for Cairo-based al-Baghdadiya TV, shouted out. As the first shoe was thrown at Bush, he said: "This is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog." And with his second shoe, which the president also dodged,  al-Zaidi said: "This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq."

This bold statement also has to be understood in its cultural context. Showing the soles of your shoes to someone, let alone tossing your shoes at them, is a sign of contempt in Arab culture.

After throwing his shoes, al-Zaidi was wrestled to the ground by security personnel and hauled away. According to Democracy Now! this morning, "Muntadar al-Zaidi has been held without charge for over twenty-four hours and has been reportedly beaten in jail. His brother said al-Zaidi has suffered a broken hand, broken ribs and internal bleeding, as well as an eye injury. Earlier today, al-Zaidi was handed over to the Iraqi military command in Baghdad."

Este japonés llamado Hiroshi lleva más de 72 días viviendo en la Terminal 1 del aeropuerto de la Ciudad de México. Solo ha salido una vez del aeropuerto y fue a visitar el Estadio Azteca. Las autoridades no pueden hacerle nada ya que su situación migratoria es legal (se chingaron) y el aeropuerto es un espacio público. Así que sigue gozando el D.F. Hiroshi.

Han pasado día y medio desde que un jet, en el que viajaba Juan Camilo Mouriño, Secretario de Gobernación, falleció. Este accidente, está siendo investigado por autoridades nacionales con el apoyo de expertos estadounidenses. Las causas aun se desconocen, la gente en las calles comenta que no sería raro que alguien estuviera detrás de este desafortunado suceso. ¿Será el narcotráfico, o un enemigo político del actual gobierno federal? Sospecha, incertidumbre, saturación mediática. Las primeras planas de los noticieros y publicaciones impresas hablan del tema, pero nadie puede aún determinar qué fue lo que pasó exactamente. Seguramente habrá una explicación en torno a una falla mecánica o error humano, pero lo único que me pregunto es: ¿y si no fue así? ¿Hasta donde llega nuestra imaginación, temor y desespero? Sí esto fue o no producto de una operación orquestada por una fuerza oculta -o no reconocida-, es un hecho que la duda está sembrada entre nosotros. Este 2008 nos ha dejado pasmados viendo cómo la sangre se derrama de nuestros televisores, las imágenes de decapitados, mutilados y acribillados son muestra fiel de la crudeza con la que se ajustan cuentas en este país. ¿No somos los únicos, no somos los peores, pero de qué carajos nos sirve eso? Generalmente me he pronunciado en contra de la violencia, pero muchas veces mis interlocutores me dicen: Quieras o no, está presente...

Sandro ha expuesto sus pinturas no solo en México sino en países como Francia, Espana e Italia recientemente.

Sandro De Ponte is an old friend from LFD, a Mexican artist established in Barcelona who at a very young age starts to feed himself with what he calls "pictorial rebelliousness", finding his own style and language. Sandro's work has been exhibited in Mexico, France, Spain and recently in Italy.
