design

“I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact. Everything I designed was unnecessary. I will definitely give up in two years’ time."

In this time of my life, when im trying to find out (or maybe invent) my roll as a designer, I found this Phillip Starck quote at mocoloco.com, one of my favourite blogs:

“I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact. Everything I designed was unnecessary. I will definitely give up in two years’ time."
(Germany's Die Zeit weekly)

I have never considered myself as an “anticonsumer”, but I refuse to believe that as a aspirant designer, I have no other way than to make some aesthetic exercises. In other words, just to produce more beautiful junk.

In a few months, i'll finally be out of school and facing this horrible and ungrateful place that for all of my life people have been preparing me for (life is a bitch).I’m not sure yet what do I want from this “real world” but for now what I know, thanks to Sophie Krier and Gabriella Gomez-Mont, is that design is about giving. Maybe not money, but experiences; to make a commitment further than aesthetics, but more focus on simple, smart and sustainable design.

Why having to regret for two more years? If you have an important name as Phillip Starck, maybe it should worth trying to change the wrong idea in consumers about industrial design.

Here are some examples of smart, critic and social design.

THE DOOR IS OPEN

While shooting a movie in the border area, I've giving me the work of making a small visual record of other events that surround the film. This is the border line between Mexico and US. In the Libertad neiborghood are a lot of surreal stuff going on. These pictures are a day that the US government sends to clean up what mexicans throw to the other side of the border. As a strange thing, this door appeared open one morning. While it is a daily obstacle to cross this point through motorcycles, choppers, agents, border patrols, cameras, moving sensors and more, when this door is open it becomes a relative matter to cross this line.

Bubu

He's Bubu. He's been shot with a pinball (in his forehead) by the border patrols while being on the border line at the hood of Libertad (Freedom), Tijuana. One more of the mistreated that try to cross.

BALKAN BEAT BOX STUCK IN THE BORDER

We got a communication from Balkan Beat Box about the problems they are having in the border, therefore they cancelled several shows.

Below the communication from Ori:

-----
Tour Cancelations!! Our Deepest Apologies

Dearest Friends and Fans,

We were stopped while crossing from Vancouver.

We are so very bummed as we have waited a long time and were very excited to play our upcoming shows in Portland, Seattle, Eugene, Los Angeles, San Francisco and at Langerado. We are unfortunately forced to cancel these shows

We are basically stuck in a hotel room and can't move anywhere as this cascades day by day and we see all the fans and clubs face what is a small disaster for bbb.

To all of you who came we hope to make it up to you soon in a grand old
show, BBB style.

Party on for us please!
Thanks so much to all the wonderful crew. All the promoters, agents, fans, and managers who worked hard to make these shows happen. Our hearts are with you

Ori and the entire BBB
